5 Fast Ways to get to know a Neighborhood

Bangkok is an amazing city, where each neighborhood offers a distinct charm and character. Whether you have just relocated or you are a city veteran, the capital will always offer new sights to discover and enjoy.

However this diversity of choice can quickly become overwhelming and confusing, especially if you are property hunting for a rental condo. As Property Agents, we always encourage clients to discover a neighborhood in their own time; especially considering rental decisions could costs you thousands of baht over several months!

Here are 5 amazing ways to get to know an area:

1. Walk and follow

Interestingly commercial activity in Central Bangkok tends to cluster around BTS and MRT Stations. So an ideal way to discover a neighborhood and its environment is simply to travel to the closest Skytrain/MRT and “follow the crowd”.

Let the people getting-off the “train” lead the way to the local-residents’ hangout spots. Along the way keep your eyes open and your senses sharp, as this will allow you to spot a multitude of local shops, restaurants, cafes and venues. This simple trick will allow you to get a feel for the type of people living in the area and the general lifestyle offered.

2. Grab coffee or lunch

All this walking and discovering will without a doubt either make you very thirsty or extremely hungry. So don’t be afraid to stop by any coffee shop or eatery, that appeals to your sense of curiosity!

A quick tip for when you order, take a look at the menu prices as this will be an indication of the general background of the local residents. While you enjoy your coffee or food , take it easy, sit back and relax; absorb the general atmosphere and maybe try to eavesdrop (Just a little) on the conversation the other clients are having. There will give you a local and intimate insight into daily life in the area.

3. Go grocery shopping

Fresh’s Editorial Team tends to recommend doing what we dub the “TOILET PAPER TEST” as follows:

– Prepare a Shopping List with everyday items such cereals, mineral water, food stuff, etc… (Make sure that the list includes Toilet Paper)
– Now go to the area you want to explore and try to visit the closest supermarket.
– Visiting a 7 Eleven/ Family Mart is strictly prohibited!!!

Going grocery shopping is a mundane chore that perfectly encapsulates the essence of local life. By going to buy these basic items (Especially Toilet Paper), you will get a general feel for the area’s convenience and will be exposed to the type of local residents that live in the area.

4. Explore after dark

If you are a night explorer type, take friends and perhaps go explore the night venues available such as bars, live music venues and beer gardens on a weekend. If you are not into the whole “drinking scene”, there is nothing wrong with settling for a relaxing dinner in a local restaurant.
The great thing about night venues, people tend to be more relaxed. This gives you a perfect opportunity to strike a conversation and get to know more about the neighborhood from residents.

5. Ask your Property Agent

Finally, your Property Agent is a local expert that is constantly renting properties in different areas of Bangkok. So don’t be afraid to ask for some advice and seek suggestions, as they will undoubtedly have a wealth of firsthand experience to share!

Exploring a new area should be an adventure, follow your senses and let your curiosity guide you.
Act and learn like a tourist visiting a new country and don’t be afraid to get lost, Bangkok is full of pleasant surprises.

Enjoy!
