Bangkok is an incredibly diverse city, with a little bit of everything for everyone!

The City offers numerous shopping options from luxury to low-priced, eating/dining choices from Thai to Italian, and attractions from museums to sport centers. On top of this Bangkok is a vibrant commercial and economic hotspot within South East Asia and as a result business and career opportunities are rife!

As a Property Agency it really comes as no surprise why thousands of expats, from all over the world call this city home.

However there is a small detail that baffles, anyone with a pet such as a Dog or Cat will find that Bangkok is notoriously non-pet friendly.

Anyone who has a pet and experienced condo-hunting will soon realize that finding a pet-friendly condo or accommodation within the city is a real struggle.

It will come as a surprise to many, that when Condo Developers and/or Building Management Offices set rules and regulations in regards to residency, pets in most cases are prohibited.

So what are your accomodation and housing options?

1. Townhouse or Detached House

Houses are perfect options for pet owners as they usually offer extra space and in many cases outdoor areas. Landlords of these properties tend to be a little more flexible and understand that clients looking for houses have specific needs and requirements (I.e. Families requiring space).

However this does not come without its downsides, as houses in central Bangkok locations tend to be extremely pricey (In many cases 100,000 THB+ Per/ Month). If budget is a major consideration, then unfortunately the compromise is location. As you would have to select non-central Bangkok locations, that are accessible only by car/motorcycle.

2. Be Sneaky!

As a Property Agency we would never recommend sneaking a pet into a “Condo/Apartment” without landlord’s knowledge and permission. As this could lead to a series of problems:

– Immediate termination of your Lease Agreement
– Forced eviction for failing to comply with terms of the lease.
– Loss of Security Deposit

However, in some cases Landlords agree to turn a “blind-eye” on the fact you intend to keep a pet within his/her property. While this is not the best option, it allows tenants to get access/reside in properties that would usually be “out-of-bounds”.

While the landlord has given permission, this does not mean that the rental is risk-free; it is important to note that if the Building Management of a Condo finds out, they may force the Landlord to terminate the rental agreement. This may result in a complicated situation for the Landlord and the tenant/pet-owners.

3. Pet Friendly Condo

The final solution, and probably the best is to simply select a Condo which is pet friendly. While this may seem fairly straightforward considering there are hundreds of Condos in Bangkok, unfortunately this restricts your choices to only a handful especially in central locations. Also it is important to note that some of these condos have standards/rules on the size of Dogs with only “toy/small” dog breeds being accepted.

The big advantage of selecting such condos is that Landlords are aware that tenants may keep pets and therefore their attitude towards “pet-related damages” (Within reason) is more relaxed. Also the living environment within the building is more social since your neighbors also tend to have “dogs and cats” giving you something to socialize over!
